THE PROMISE

The Northern Light accelerator delivers hands-on support to validate your product with real customers, navigate sales in local and EU markets, and secure traction alongside revenue. We also prioritise founder resilience to keep your team focused and execution-ready — the result is faster market entry, reduced burn, and a higher chance of sustainable growth in the European ecosystem.

I only wish I'd done this earlier. It's an ideal landing pad for anyone looking to break into Europe.

WHAT YOU’LL WALK AWAY WITH

HOW IT WORKS

Three months, Three phases

1. Arrive

The first two weeks are all about getting you up and running in Helsinki. In-person attendance at Maria 01 is compulsory during the first two weeks of the program.

Get settled into the Maria 01 community, get your desk, set your goals, and meet the mentors and fellow founders you’ll be working alongside.

2. Accelerate

DETERMINE DIRECTION
Navigate sales in the Finnish and European business culture ·  Peer meetups & mentor matchmaking ·  Resilience support ·  Lead list ·  Structured work on product-market fit

BUILD & VALIDATE
Test traction · Refine positioning · Customer interviews & outreach · Access to partner networks for pilot/PoC opportunities · Pitch development

LAUNCH & SCALE
Warm intros to advisors · Local customer feedback · Resilience check-ins · Prepare for next-stage funding, grant applications, relocation

3. Showcase

The program ends during Slush week (autumn batch) or Maria 01 NOW (spring batch)! You’ll get the chance to showcase your solutions to an audience from the local ecosystem, including partners and potential clients.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT

Not your average accelerator

Tailored, founder-first support

No long, generic sessions for our convenience. Short, focused group workshops, individual check-ins and hands-on guidance shaped around your goals — built by founders, for founders, focused on what moves the needle.

We’re in it for the long haul

Office space, landing support and help settling into the Finnish ecosystem — then a lasting connection to our partners, alumni and one of the strongest startup networks in Europe. And we uniquely prioritise your resilience, because burnout kills great startups before the market does.

Equity-free

We don’t take a stake. We open doors — warm introductions to partners who support you long after the program ends. You keep your cap table clean and gain strategic connections that count.

of all funding raised at Maria 01 in 2024 went to startups with international founders — though they made up just 36% of members.

Northern Light is built from within Maria 01 — one of Europe’s leading startup communities, home to 250+ startups, dozens of VC firms and corporate innovation teams. You’re not starting from scratch; you’re plugging into a platform already built for global success.

The moment we joined Maria 01 and shared that we were part of the accelerator, people started seeing us differently. We gained momentum and attention from all over the world — and by the end of the program, we closed our first-ever angel round.

Still unsure if it’s the right fit? Reach out — we read every message.

Who is this program for?

Early-stage international startups looking to enter the European market through Finland. You should have a company registered somewhere, at least an MVP that you can demo live, early traction and pilot users. Hardware startups should have the necessary approvals to be sold in the EU. You need to be committed to scaling in Europe. You can also apply if you’re already in Finland with at least one non-Finnish co-founder or team member.

Do i need to move to Finland?

You don’t need to relocate to Finland fully — you can join some sessions onsite and others online. We only require full in-person participation for four weeks: the first two and final two weeks of the program. However, we do give preference to startups that are able to be present for the entire duration. We believe the best outcomes come from being part of the local ecosystem, collaborating face-to-face, and experiencing the unique culture and community here.

Is there a cost? How much?

Yes, there is a cost to participating in the program. The cost is €2,000 (Incl. VAT) per startup (up to two co-founders). This covers the full program, its activities and a support package valued at €120,000 — plus a dedicated desk at Maria 01 for three months with full campus access, and a startup ticket to Slush 2026 for the autumn batch. All delivered equity-free. The full amount needs to be paid before the program starts, in order for you to confirm your place.

Do you take equity?

No — we do not take any equity in exchange for participation in the program.

We estimate the program value to be around €150,000, considering the workshops, expert speakers and mentorship, and events included. However, your only contribution is the program participation fee (see the question above for details). This means you keep 100% ownership of your company.

Do you help with visas or relocation?

We are not able to provide guidance regarding visas. However, if necessary, we can write an invitation letter to ease the process after you have been accepted to the program. For detailed information on the application process and requirements, please visit the official websites of Business Finland or Migri (Finnish Immigration Service), or contact Sisu Factory. You are responsible for flights and personal arrangements, but we’ll help make it as smooth as possible.

What kind of startups do you select?

We look for teams that are:

  • Already having an MVP or early traction
  • Solving real problems with evidence of the market need
  • Ambitious about entering the European market
  • Coachable and committed to growth
What stage should we be at?

Most teams are in the pre-seed to seed stage, with a prototype, MVP, or initial users. You don’t need revenue yet — but you should have a clear hypothesis and market insight.

Do you provide funding?

We don’t invest directly, and we don’t provide investor introductions as part of this program. But if you decide to remain a member of Maria 01 after the program by purchasing a membership, our team can support you going forward with information about how to reach out to investors in the ecosystem.

What happens after the program ends?

We’re with you beyond the three-month program— after the program, you’ll have the opportunity to remain part of the Maria 01 community if you apply for a membership. You’ll have the option to apply for an ongoing office or co-working space as a member. We’ll help you connect with partners to explore any available funding or grant options to support your continued presence in Finland if needed.

What happens after I submit my application?

Once you submit your application (and confirm the deadline has not passed), our team will review it carefully. You can expect to receive an update from us within the stated review period.

There’s no need to follow up — we promise to reach out to every applicant. Please note that contacting us separately will not speed up the process, but rest assured that each application is reviewed with attention and care.

When can I apply for the program?

We run two accelerator programs each year, each with a dedicated application period. Check this website for the current application dates. If no application period is open at the moment, you can sign up for our mailing list below to stay informed about when the next application window opens.

Land in Europe

Applications open again in November. In the meantime, register your interest, and we’ll let you know when applications open.
