M01 Rocketeers Episode 05: Life on autopilot
M01 Rocketeers Episode 05: Life on autopilot
Welcome to M01 Rocketeers – the podcast by Maria 01, the Nordics’ leading startup community and launchpad for the future.
In this Futures Tales series, we delve into the cutting-edge world of emerging technologies and visionary ideas, listen to fascinating future scenarios and discuss how the future might or might not unfold.
In the fifth—and final—episode of this season, we delve into the transformative potential of AI, automation and robotics on our everyday lives. Advanced robotics—from exoskeletons enhancing human abilities to general-purpose robots and autonomous vehicles transforming industries and cities—promises to revolutionise daily life. AI and automation offer solutions for sustainability and global challenges, but equitable access and responsible energy use must be addressed. Automation may ease labour shortages in some sectors but risks unemployment in others, highlighting the need for thoughtful policymaking. A preferred future requires not just innovation but inclusive dialogue, a shared vision, and collaborative efforts to ensure meaningful and equitable progress.
We kick off each episode by listening to a discussion-provoking story from the future—a scenario blending fact and imagination, crafted using strategic foresight methods. You can also find the story below.
Join us as we embark on a journey to explore the possible, plausible, and preferable futures with the brightest minds of the Finnish startup scene.
Our guests for this episode are:
- Antti Toponen, Co-Founder of Kuurai
- Teppo Hudsson, Founder and CEO of Fibo Labs
Our special guest for each episode is Sarita Runeberg, CEO of Maria 01. Hosted by Camilla Mikama, Marketing & Communications Manager at Maria 01.
FUTURE TALES: ROBOTIC REVIVAL
Fields that once struggled to yield little more than stunted hay are now a thriving ecosystem—vibrant layers of diverse plant species, buzzing with life, and teeming with creatures both wild and domesticated. The once compacted, clay-heavy soil has transformed into rich, nutrient-packed humus, alive with potential.
This land, passed down from my grandparents, had been dedicated to strawberry farming for decades, but with heavy reliance on non-organic fertilizers and pesticides. Over time, the soil became barren, yields dwindled, and as climate change intensified and pollinators disappeared, the farm was left to decay.
Five years ago, after my work hours were halved and remote work became the new norm, I moved to the farm. Robotic taxis made commuting easy, and with food prices skyrocketing due to climate change and global conflicts, I saw an opportunity to breathe new life into this land. The city center I once knew had become eerily quiet, its lively shops and restaurants replaced by automation, leaving empty streets behind. With the world shifting, I felt I had nothing to lose.
Farming was foreign to me, but the rise of educational AI made learning quick and accessible. I embraced the challenge. When I needed hands-on guidance, experts from across the globe sent remote-controlled telepresence robots to assist me. More complex tasks, like pruning apple trees, were best learned through immersive virtual reality sessions.
With the help of worm-like mini robots, I analyzed and transformed the soil, mimicking the role earthworms once played. Above, swarms of tiny drones pollinate plants, monitor their health, and gently deter pests like birds and rabbits. They also manage irrigation, organic fertilization, and even the harvesting process. My exoskeleton amplifies my strength and endurance, making it easier to balance the demands of my day job with the physical challenges of farming.
Little by little, the land has been revived. The soil is fertile again, plants are thriving, and the return of wildlife—pollinators, birds, and even bees—marks the farm’s rebirth. This once-forgotten farm is now flourishing, a living testament to the power of nature—with a little help from cutting-edge technology.
