International Founders Drive Growth: 60% of Funding Goes to Startups with Global Teams, Maria 01 Impact Report reveals

The 2024 Maria 01 Impact Report highlights the power of international collaboration and impact-driven entrepreneurship within our community. From record-breaking funding milestones to the seamless integration of AI across industries, Maria 01 startups continue to show remarkable resilience and growth. This report also underscores our commitment to solving global challenges and fostering a diverse, internationally connected ecosystem.

Helsinki, Finland (March 13, 2025). The 2024 Maria 01 Impact Report reveals a striking trend: startups with internationally diverse founding teams secured nearly 60% of all funding raised by Maria 01 startups. More than a third (36%) of the startups have at least one founder with an international background, underscoring the ecosystem’s global appeal.

“International founders tend to be bold risk-takers, willing to make bigger leaps of faith in pursuit of success. Many are highly educated, bringing expertise, fresh perspectives, and a strong drive to innovate, develop new products, and launch businesses. This influx of talent and ideas is a tremendous asset—not only for the Finnish startup ecosystem but for the entire economic future of Europe,” says Sarita Runeberg, CEO of Maria 01.

The Maria 01 community thrives on diversity, with talent from nearly 40 nationalities fostering a global mindset and driving cross-border innovation. Most international founders come from Europe, Asia, and South America, bringing expertise, fresh perspectives, and a strong drive to innovate.

A key driver of these startups’ success is the global networks international founders bring. In return, Maria 01 offers invaluable local connections, helping them navigate the Finnish and European markets, secure funding, and forge strategic partnerships. This global connectivity is at the heart of Maria 01’s new strategy, attracting ambitious startups, investors, and partners from around the world to build an internationally connected ecosystem that fuels innovation and growth.

Resilience and AI-Powered Growth in a Challenging Market

Despite a challenging market, Maria 01 startups increased their collective revenue by 18% (2022–2023), demonstrating remarkable resilience. At the end of 2024, Maria 01 startups surpassed a major milestone, raising over €1B in funding since the hub’s launch in 2016.

Meanwhile, employment numbers declined, suggesting that many startups have maximized efficiency—likely due to the growing adoption of AI across various business units.

“We have stopped tracking AI as a separate industry in our Impact Report as we see that AI is affecting everything that we and the startups do. It has become an integral part of nearly every sector, seamlessly embedded into daily tasks, processes, and innovations. We were also happy to see that despite startups struggling to raise funding, they have been able to grow their businesses nevertheless,” Runeberg adds.

Sectors experiencing rapid expansion include Health & Wellbeing and Greentech & Energy, alongside emerging industries such as Security & Defence and HR Tech.

A Strong Commitment to Impact-Driven Innovation

For the first time, Maria 01 measured the number of impact-driven startups within its community, focusing on active members in 2024. The findings are compelling: 40% of startups focus on solving global challenges, particularly in Greentech & Energy, Health & Wellbeing, and Education. The remaining startups drive meaningful change within their respective industries. Mission-driven innovation extends beyond specific sectors, with startups across diverse fields actively working toward positive impact.

Maria 01’s commitment to fostering high-impact innovation continues to shape its role as a catalyst for startups tackling global challenges—ensuring that bold ideas, diverse talent, and cutting-edge technologies converge to create a lasting impact.
