Topic: Neural networks and machine learning research at the Laboratory of Computer and Information Science
Abstract: The laboratory of Computer and Information science (CIS) existed under various names from 1965 until the establishment of Aalto University and the unification of several laboratories into larger units, culminating in the new Aalto CS department. The head of the lab was first Teuvo Kohonen and since early 1990’s Erkki Oja. In many respects, this was a pioneering neural network lab not only in Finland, but world-wide. Prof. Teuvo Kohonen will give a presentation on his own contributions and career later in this seminar series, so in my talk I will concentrate on the other aspects and especially the developments over the last 25 years. These include several consequent Centers of Excellence (continuously from 1994 until 2017) with a wide range of research topics focusing on various aspects of machine learning. Dozens of PhD’s were produced
and there was a strong curriculum of related courses. Notably, the master’s program “Machine learning and data mining”, established about 10 years ago, is in 2017 the third most popular Master’s program in all the six schools of Aalto University. At the end of my talk I will give a short overview of my own research into unsupervised machine learning using matrix decompositions.
